What Size Dumpster Do I Need?
A practical guide to choosing between a 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 yard dumpster for your Bridgeport, CT or Greater Bridgeport project. Call (475) 244-1722 and we'll help you size it right.

"What size do I actually need?" is the question our dispatch line hears on nearly every call, and it's a fair one — nobody wants to pay for a container that sits half empty, and nobody wants a driver to show up with something too small for the pile in the driveway. We stock five sizes — 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yard — and each one earns its place in the lineup. Here's how we walk homeowners and contractors through the decision every day, from our yard at 775 Washington Ave, Bridgeport, CT 06604 out across the rest of Greater Bridgeport.
How dumpster sizes are measured
A "yard" in dumpster terms means cubic yards of volume, not a footprint measurement. Our two smallest containers — the 10 and 15 yard — run about 14 to 16 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, standing roughly 3.5 to 4.5 feet tall. Our 20, 30 and 40 yard containers share a longer 22-foot by 7.5-foot footprint and simply grow taller as the yardage increases, topping out around 8 feet on the 40 yard. That matters for placement here more than in some parts of the country: a taller box needs more overhead clearance, and a lot of Bridgeport-area properties have mature trees, a low carport roof, or a tight downtown approach that can rule out the tallest sizes even when the flat ground itself is plenty long.
10 yard dumpster: small cleanouts and tight driveways
Our 10 yard dumpster is the one we deliver most for single-room cleanouts, a small bathroom or kitchen remodel, a garage purge, or clearing out a shed. Its compact footprint fits comfortably on the narrower driveways common on the older blocks near downtown Bridgeport. If you're hauling out furniture, a season's worth of yard debris, or the contents of a garage, this usually covers it.
15 yard dumpster: the mid-size cleanout
The 15 yard dumpster steps up from the 10 without needing any more driveway room, since it shares the same compact footprint. We recommend it for a multi-room cleanout, a deck or porch tear-out, a mid-size landscaping project, or a garage-plus-shed purge that's a bit more than a 10 yard can comfortably swallow.
20 yard dumpster: the most requested size
Our 20 yard dumpster is the size we deliver more than any other. It's a genuine middle ground — large enough for a full garage cleanout, a whole-house decluttering project, a roofing tear-off on an average single-family home, or a kitchen remodel pulling out cabinets and flooring together. If you're not sure which size to book, this is usually where we start until we know more about the project.
30 yard dumpster: additions and larger renovations
The 30 yard dumpster is built for bigger jobs — a home addition, a full interior gut renovation, a detached garage build, or a commercial tenant buildout. It shares the same 22-foot footprint as our 20 and 40 yard containers but stands taller, so we'll always confirm overhead clearance before delivery, especially on lots with mature trees or a tighter city approach.
40 yard dumpster: new construction and major cleanouts
Our largest container, the 40 yard dumpster, is the choice for new home construction in the suburban towns, commercial buildouts, and large-scale property cleanouts. Because it stands the tallest of our five sizes, it needs an open, unobstructed placement area — this one is almost always a job-site placement rather than a tight residential driveway.
| Size | Best for | Footprint |
|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | Single-room cleanouts, small remodels, tight driveways | ~14' x 7.5' |
| 15 yard | Multi-room cleanouts, deck tear-outs, mid-size landscaping | ~16' x 7.5' |
| 20 yard | Whole-house cleanouts, roofing tear-offs, kitchen remodels | ~22' x 7.5' |
| 30 yard | Additions, full gut renovations, garage builds | ~22' x 7.5' |
| 40 yard | New construction, large cleanouts, commercial buildouts | ~22' x 7.5' |
Weight versus volume: why they're not the same thing
Volume is only half the sizing question. A 20 yard container looks like it should swallow almost anything, but a load of roofing shingles, storm debris or old plaster can hit a weight allowance long before the box looks full. When we size a project, we're thinking about both dimensions at once — how much space the debris takes up, and how heavy it actually is. If your project mixes light household junk with something dense like shingles or wet storm-soaked branches, mention that specifically when you call, since it changes the recommendation. Our roofing tear-off sizing guide walks through exactly this kind of weight-driven decision.
Matching size to project type
A few patterns we see constantly around Bridgeport and Greater Bridgeport:
- Estate and full-house cleanouts — usually a 20 yard, sometimes stepping up to a 30 if the home has a full garage, attic and basement all packed. See our estate cleanout checklist for a room-by-room planning guide.
- Roofing tear-offs — shingles are heavy, so size depends more on roof square footage and layer count than on visual volume. Our roofing tear-off sizing guide breaks this down further.
- New construction — typically a 30 or 40 yard, often with more than one container over the life of the build. Our new construction cleanup guide covers phased ordering.
- Coastal storm and seasonal yard debris — a 10 or 15 yard usually covers it; see our yard waste dumpster rental service.
Renting across a multi-phase project
Larger renovations and new construction jobs rarely need just one container for the whole project. A common pattern we see: a 20 or 30 yard early on for demolition debris, followed by a swap to a fresh container partway through framing or finish work once the first one fills. If you know your project will run in phases, tell us that up front — we can plan the swap schedule with you instead of you having to call mid-project wondering whether to order a second box or wait on a pickup and redelivery.
When in doubt, call and describe the project
Guessing on size is the single most avoidable mistake in dumpster rental — ordering too small means paying for a second haul, and ordering too large sometimes just wastes usable driveway space for no reason. When you call, tell us the project type, roughly how much material you're dealing with, and where the container will sit, and our team will recommend a size based on what we actually deliver across Bridgeport and the rest of our Greater Bridgeport service area.
